Onion Diamond (OD) is empirically and scientifically proven to  lower blood-sugar level of diabetics patient. The key lies on the eleutherinosidea content. Eleutherinosidea blocks the function of alpha-glucosidase enzyme which is located on the surface of the intestine membrane. The enzyme itself has a function to breakdown the carbohydrate/starch and disaccharide.That is how the onion diamond works to lower the sugar blood level, by disturbing the parsing sequence of glucose or its complexity in the intestine area.


OD is a special plant that we can find a lot in Central Kalimantan - Indonesia. Dayak Tribe has use this plant from long time ago as a remedy for many diseases. It has a red root tuber, and ribbon shape green leaves, with white flowers.  OD originally comes from Rain Forrest in South America, but somehow brought and cultivated in Kalimantan. OD best habitat is in mountain area which has the height between 600 to 1500 meter above sea level. It needs a moist humus soil area with open exposure to sunlight, so it can grow flawlessly fast within 2-3 months before the harvest time.

Plant Morphology 

OD has some other relative species such as : red onion, garlic, etc. Its specific characteristics are : shiny red root-tuber with very smooth surface. The leaves composition is pairing to each other and have a double fins structure. The venation lies parallel side by side with a smooth leaf side and has an inline ribbon form.  This is also a decorative plant because the beauty of its white flower.
OD could grows up to 50 cm height.  The flower usually blossom in the afternoon between 5 - 7 o'clock. It also has a fruit in box-shaped with a curvy end. When it becomes ripe, the fruit will crack out into 3 cavities which contain so many seeds.  The seeds shape like oval or nearly as rectangle box.  The root tuber  ,unlikely red onion, has no aroma or smell.

Chemical Composition

OD contains : alkaloid, glycosides, flavonoid, phenolic, steroid, and tannin substance which is the source of biopharmacy for remedies to human life.  Alkaloid is an organic substance which contain a lot of nitrogen as a part of heterocyclic which is good for human metabolism. Even further, the combination of alkaloid, flavonoid, glycoside, and saponin have a hipoglycemic activity to reduce and suppress blood sugar level in human body. Tannin and alkaloid are also acting as an anti-(bad)bacteria in our digestive system, so somehow it may cure stomachache caused by some bacteria.   But please be careful to those who has chronic gastric problem, OD can raised up your gastric acid, so it has to be consumed after meal or with meal, meanwhile the best effect for suppressing the blood glucose level, you must consume or drink the stew when your stomach as empty +/- 2 hours before or after meal/other medications.

The Traditional Usage and Pharmacological Effect

Here are the list of illnesses that have been herediterily cured by continue consumption of OD : 
  • Breast Cancer
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetic
  • High Cholesterol
  • Anti-Stroke
  • Ulcers/Abscess
  • Intestine Cancer
  • Stomachache
  • Yellow fever (hepatitis A), 
  • Arthritis and back pain
  • Prostate problem,
  • Thyroid inflammation
  • Obesity, etc.
  • (also used for diuretic patient with kidneys problem)
OD can be used in its fresh form, powder, stew, or even sweetened confectionery.  But I strongly suggest that you drink its stewed water.  Why ? Because it is simple and more likely the stewing process will zero out other unnecessary bacterial. To keep a long storage, first you'd better dry out the OD or slices of OD under the sunlight for view days.  The logic is to reduce the water level inside the OD will long last its storage expiration time.  After that you may use a spoon of it to boil it with 2 glass of water until it become 1 glass remain.  And drink it after getting cool.

There are several combination between OD + other plants, such as Red Ginger, Kaempferia Galanga (kencur), Sadaguri, Jati Belanda, Temu Giring, Java Chilli, and others. But I i will try to elaborate in the other posting in the future.

Me myself only focus to use OD for diabetic, cholesterol, and obesity.  But since OD is very natural, i believe that people may try it for the other cause of illness too.
